To support the development of viticulture and winemaking in Kvemo Kartli, a memorandum of cooperation was signed between the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture and the Kvemo Kartli Wine Union (KKWU). The signing ceremony brought together representatives of the Center, sector specialists, and current and prospective members of the Wine Union.
Through facilitation by the Local Economic Development Project (LEDP), common interests were identified and specific areas of cooperation were agreed between Kvemo Kartli winegrowers and winemakers and the Scientific-Research Center.
Under the memorandum, the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture and the Kvemo Kartli Wine Union will cooperate on identifying and scientifically studying local grape varieties and raising awareness of their potential. The partnership will also cover research into vineyard soils, the promotion of sustainable viticulture, improvements in wine quality, and the introduction of modern approaches.
The parties will also work together to strengthen the competitiveness of Kvemo Kartli wines in both domestic and international markets.
This cooperation is particularly important for Kvemo Kartli, as some of the region’s local and wild grape varieties still require identification, documentation, and scientific study. A better understanding of these resources will help local vinegrowers and winemakers develop wines that reflect the region’s distinctive character and improve their quality.
The memorandum lays the foundation for long-term cooperation focused on practical results. Access to the Scientific-Research Center’s expertise and infrastructure will help Kvemo Kartli winegrowers and winemakers study local grape varieties, improve vineyard management, enhance wine quality, and explore new market opportunities.
It is worth noting that, with the facilitation of LEDP, the Kvemo Kartli Wine Association was established in February 2026 to support the development of the region’s wine sector and increase the visibility of Kvemo Kartli as a wine-producing region. LEDP will continue to support cooperation, information exchange, and the planning of joint activities so that the areas outlined in the memorandum are translated into concrete research, educational, and practical initiatives. The needs and experience of winegrowers and winemakers will remain central to this process, ensuring that future activities respond to the region’s actual challenges.
