On May 8, the Local Economic Development Project (LEDP) presented the preliminary findings of a study on the economic potential of the wine market in the Kartli region. The meeting brought together vineyard owners, winemakers, representatives of the private sector, government agencies, and local municipalities.
The study, conducted by DEPA Consulting, aimed to assess the current state of wine production and sales in the municipalities of Bolnisi, Tetritskaro, and Marneuli. It also sought to identify systemic challenges, existing opportunities, and barriers to the development of the sector.
“The economic analysis of the wine sector revealed that despite numerous challenges, there is strong potential for growth. Strengthening the sector in Kvemo Kartli can generate economic, social, and environmental benefits. Achieving this requires a systemic approach focused on expanding knowledge, and improving access to finance and technology,” stated Nestan Mermanishvili, LEDP Component Manager.

The research identified several key barriers to development, including outdated vineyard and production technologies, limited quality control and laboratory services, a lack of knowledge in modern winemaking practices, weak cooperation among producers, and issues related to land ownership.
Participants emphasized the need for a comprehensive and systemic approach that includes strengthening the professional knowledge of grape growers and winemakers, expanding access to modern technologies and financial resources, and developing quality control mechanisms.
“With Helvetas’ support, several associations operating in the wine sector have the opportunity to come together. This collaboration will help us produce healthier, high-quality wine and, more importantly, clearly identify what we lack and what we need for further development,” said Guram Avqopashvili, Director of the Wine Bolnisi Association.
The Local Economic Development Project (LEDP) aims to support and strengthen the wine sector in Kvemo Kartli. It contributes to enhanced cooperation between producers and processors, increased productivity, and improved competitiveness of the sector in both domestic and export markets.
The project is implemented by a consortium of HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation and WINS Global Consult, with financial support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
